“Wounded Eagles” by Cheryl Huston
Eagles tethered by wheel chairs, or with broken and missing wings, But you still love your country And the freedom that it brings.
In your eyes we see “the stare” of horrors you leave unspoken, Your personal wars, as well as the battles that left your bodies broken.
If we could see inside your soul, we’d find your spirit strong, The Eagle’s heart, with its power and vision, for Above the wrongs and infirmities with powerful wings you’ve risen.
For even wounded, the Eagle’s courage And spirit remian unbound. Your undaunted strength and love for Freedom inspire us here, Though to the earth we’re bound.
Someday you’ll sour above the heights, Your bodies well and whole. Moved by the strength and courage The eagle carries in its soul.
And from the cliffs of your lofty perch Your memory will be the might Of every eagle who fights for freedom And what they know is right.
